Canon point & release date: Artifact ending, November 2022
CRAU (if applicable): n/a
Powers (no more than 150 words):
Elster is a Replika, built of much sturdier stuff than a natural human. A titanium skeleton, a carbon fiber and polyurethane shell. She has organic components, but they're well-shielded and pretty much entirely in the torso. She's a fair bit stronger than most humans, but she's not going to be chucking cars around, either. Her body is also enabled for a multitude of modules allowing extra functionality. Elster is equipped with a flashlight in the shoulder, a radio receiver, and a camera in her eye. She's able to revisit anything she's seen perfectly in her databanks, though this can be tampered with. Additionally, she has an internal mapping system as part of her surveying functions, letting her quickly understand and remember the layout of places she's visited.
Personality
What is your character most afraid of? How are they defined by this fear? (100-300 words)
In a word, Elster fears failure. Replikas by their nature, to a greater or lesser extent, fear reaching their fail state, where their persona degrades to the point they no longer know who they are. Elster experiences many traumatic failures over the course of Signalis—her failure to keep the ship running longer, her failure to protect Ariane, her failure to keep their promise and, thus, her abandonment of Ariane. Occasionally, we see this manifest as an occasionally aversive personality—as in the “Leave” ending, where Elster can’t bear to face her past mistakes. More often, it manifests as an unwavering, unhealthy determination: failure isn’t an option, because the consequences are too severe. Elster will put herself through hell, as if it’s the most normal thing she could do.
What is your character's greatest desire? How are they defined by this desire? (100-300 words)
The fear of persona degradation is mirrored by Elster’s desire to be treated, and loved, as a complete person. She resisted Ariane’s early efforts to “personify” her, but after allowing herself enough vulnerability to let her in, being treated as a person with the capacity for her own wants and desires thoroughly changed her. She loves Ariane for a number of reasons, but one of the most basic and primal is that Ariane helped her grow into something more than just a manufactured servant. Replikas are, for the most part, designed and deployed as interchangeable copies of a base template, and LSTR-512 has deviated from this to become something altogether unique, with a ripple effect on the other LSTR units that followed.
How will not having memories change your character? What core personality traits, if any, will change? How? (200-300 words)
Elster’s memory loss will take some crucial personality traits along with it. In some ways, lacking the core of her relationship with Ariane will cause her to be more detached, and display much less open compassion towards others. She’s likely to be even more abrupt, more businesslike—and she already lacked social graces beyond the basics, in most situations. This is an Elster who remembers nothing of the events of the game itself, and the unspeakable horrors that she and Ariane would have to endure following Cycle 3000. While she’s not going to be quite as social in the beginning as she might have been with Ariane once they fell in love, she’ll open up to others slightly more naturally than she would if the endless repetitions of Signalis had set in.
The unreliability of memory, and the question of the degree to which memory forms a person’s self, is central to Signalis, so the absence of memory will weigh on her to some degree—but at the same time, she’s likely to find it strangely familiar, if not almost comforting. Replikas in particular are carefully kept sheltered from things which might remind them of their previous lives, so the blurring of memory and self will not be new to Elster in the least, even if she won’t know why.
Memories
You have 10 memory points. How will you use them?
Relationship trappings: 3 points.
She remembers Ariane Yeong’s name, as well as the fact that they were crewmates and, later, lovers, aboard the Penrose-512. She feels estranged from the memory, like it happened to someone else.
Major memory: 2 points
Elster will remember the routine work she did aboard the Penrose on its three-thousandth cycle, as well as the night she spent with Ariane and the contents of a transmission the ship received from Eusan afterwards.
Major memory: 2 points.
General memories of serving as a soldier from her Gestalt life. Most of this will be non-specific, largely based on impressions. She remembers her template’s name, Lilith Itou, as well as a woman from her platoon, Alina Seo. The only vivid, detailed aspect of the memory will be about an hour of battle leading up to Lilith and Alina’s deaths.
Skill: 1 point
Elster is a trained soldier, with her template and programming meant to ready her for combat. This will mostly give her combat awareness and the understanding of how to use and maintain various firearms.
Skill: 1 point
Elster’s an engineer. She’s intended primarily for repairing and maintaining the ship, but her model series is designed for ingenuity and technical ability in general.
